Homeward Bound Pug Rescue

As most of you know I am very fond of Homeward Bound Pug Rescue.  We fell in love with the breed when we got Roxie, and as you can tell we didn't stop with her.  We did not rescue Roxie or Conan because at the time I was not aware of a pug rescue.  When we moved back to Oklahoma my good friend Erin told me about her aunt, Gail Tucker, who is the founder of Homeward Bound Pug Rescue.  I did some research and got in contact with Gail to see if I could help in any way.  Charles wasn't quite ready for another pug, but I wanted to help the rescue.  I finally convinced Charles to let us adopt a pug from the rescue and that's when we got Zeppelin.  He truly is a wonderful addition to our family.

I was amazed to learn what all goes into keeping a rescue going, and how many pugs they get (which is a lot).  Volunteers, donations, and fosters are very important to a rescue...these things are ALWAYS needed.  While we lived in Oklahoma I helped with a fundraiser for the rescue (We raised $1000), any event that I could attend and help I was there, and I also helped foster some wonderful pugs in the process.  My In-laws got into the spirit of the rescue and adopted a pug as well, Bob.  All rescues need help, and I'm so glad I was able to help them in any way I could.  Now we live in Arkansas, and I still stay in contact with Gail to see if there is anything they need.

Being apart of a rescue family is so rewarding.  If you can donate, volunteer or foster to help a local rescue group, do it, you will never be disappointed!  I am always spreading the word about Homeward Bound because I believe in their mission, and I'm thankful that we have rescues out there that can help ALL dogs in need.  To learn more about rescues do a google search for local rescues in your state.  If you want to learn more about Homeward Bound Pug Rescue just click on the link below.  Again, help is ALWAYS needed!

Homeward Bound Pug Rescue and Adoption of Oklahoma was officially formed in 2003. We are an all volunteer, not for profit organization dedicated to the Pug breed. We want to give every unwanted Pug in Oklahoma and neighboring states a second chance. Our mission is to place Pugs that have been surrendered, abandoned, or abused into loving and caring forever homes.

How Much Do You REALLY Know About Rescue?

A quick TRUE/FALSE quiz

1. Rescues get free veterinary service.
FALSE We get a 20 to 30% discount. Vet costs have increased substantially over the last few years. A healthy pug costs a minimum of $200. An unhealthy pug can cost more than $1000!

2. Rescues get lots of donations to help with costs.
FALSE Most our income comes from adoption fees. Donations are sporadic and something we can't count on, although we certainly do appreciate them.

3. Adopting a rescue pug is like adopting a child.
TRUE These are our "children" and we want the best possible homes. Pugs that come to rescue have been through a lot and we screen very carefully to make sure their next home is their forever home.

4. It is better to adopt a puppy than an older dog.
FALSE Puppies love to chew things they shouldn't and can be difficult to house train. They have a lot of energy that some people are just not ready for. On the other hand, older pugs come with good house manners and are generally more laid back. These special older dogs seem to really appreciate their new owners and quickly become a devoted family member.

5. Adopting a rescue pug is better than buying a puppy. TRUE Puppy mills and back yard breeders are notorious for housing their animals in horrendous conditions. The animals are starved, neglected, subjected to abuse and thrown out like garbage once they have outlived their "usefulness". Our rescue takes in dozens of these pugs a year and they are very difficult to place, as it takes some time to get them to trust humans.

Zeppelin's first day home (2/20/10) and Max already loves him.

Fits in SO well, already part of the family!
The pugs now - Conan (3), Roxie (4) and Zeppelin (1).  Zeppelin has been with us almost a year.  Looks like they've been together their whole lives.
